Classic Moments In Choi History: Evo 2008

Classic video, classic Choi.
The city: Las Vegas, NV.
The location: The Tropicana Hotel.
The game: Super Turbo, the final year. EVER.
The opponent: Tokido

Many of you already know that in Street Fighter, John Choi and Tokido have had an international rivalry. Tokido, oftentimes known as “that-cheap-mother-fucker-that-uses-the-cheapest-shit-to-win”, eliminated John Choi’s O. Sagat the previous year in Super Turbo by beating him TWICE, leaving him with second place and zero dignity or respect (from me.)

Stubborn, at Evo 2008, Choi had assembled a plan. Placed in Tokido’s pool, he attempted to change up his O. Sagat game to finally overcome that cheap Vega ultra double-crossup fakeout bullshit.

Now here’s a funny story that many people don’t know.

Alex Valle, friend and rival of John, came over and offered some encouraging PROTIPs: (Paraphrased and loosely interpreted for your enjoyment.)

Valle: Hey retard, you should switch to Ken and DP that ass.
Choi: Nah dawg, I got this shit LOCKED UP. I’m the best, mayne. I deeeeed it.
Valle: Suit yourself, gook.

John proceeded to get his ass beat by Claw yet again and was sent to the losers bracket.

Fast forward 12,549 tiger shots later, John Choi, Alex Valle, and Tokido were all featured on the big screen along with 5 others as the respected top 8 of the game. Interestingly, Alex Valle and Tokido were set to face off in winner’s semifinals, and instead of picking his standard unorthodox-Ryu, he chose Ken, just like he told John to do two days earlier in pools. Alex beat Tokido and sent him to losers… only to fight John.

Light bulb goes off, John picks Ken, does some fucking DPs, and we see one of the greatest matches (and one of my personal favorite matches) in Evo history. Check it out above and below.

Shoutouts to Seth Killian for the ESPN-level commentary.
